Collection: Nia'ful Kuumba "Purpose'ful Creativity"

These workshops are called Nia’ful Kuumba, which in Swahili means Purpose and  Creativity. They are the 5th & 6th Principles of Kwanzaa.

The purpose is to introduce children and adults (especially seniors) to the empowering art of dollmaking. For that reason, I have created (2) two workshops to unlock participants’ creative abilities, stimulate their imagination, and reveal their awesomeness and the unlimited possibilities they possess within.

  • Children under 10 must be accompanied and assisted by a parent or adult.
  • Duration hours listed allow time before and after for set-up and clean-up.
  • No sewing machine is needed.
  1. The Crafting Experience (2-3 hours)                           Participants create their choice of:
    1. Brooches
    2. Key Chains/Purse Charms
    3. Magnets
    4. Ornaments
  1. Dollmaking Workshop (2-4 hours)                             Participants complete pre-sewn doll bodies and create no-sew clothing.                                                  They will have the choice of:
    1. 10”, 15” or 18” doll bodies
    2. Butterscotch, Caramel, Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Latte, Mocha, or Vanilla skin tones.

All fabrics, hair, and accessories will be provided. Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring favorites of their own too. Each participant will also receive the pattern(s) used in each workshop.

I am sharing my “specialized” form of dollmaking in hope of enticing people to want to learn the entire process. My goal is to create a nationwide “apprentice” dollmaker of “community villages” to help me create dolls to donate to children and seniors in facilities and hospitals away from friends and family.  Eventually, my plan is to expand internationally to Black and Brown countries where children have never held or seen a doll that looked like them.
